Gate frame engineering

A fence panel on hinges is not a gate.

Every Aluglobus gate starts with a complete frame: vertical frames, top and bottom members, a slat track and a stopper. The slats sit inside the frame, so the leaf stays square and the hinges carry a frame, not a loose panel.

FAQ

Questions about the ALU20 6′ × 6′ gate.

What is included in the ALU20 Universal DIY 6′ × 6′ kit?

The listing includes the pre-engineered aluminum gate frame, wide lock side, top and bottom frame, gate T-stopper, receiver L-stopper side component, one heavy-duty 5-inch support hinge and sixteen black ALU20 horizontal slats.

Is the aluminum gate rust-proof?

The 6063-T6 aluminum does not develop iron-oxide rust like steel. The architectural powder coating adds exterior surface protection. Routine cleaning is still recommended, especially in coastal environments.

Can I install the gate myself?

Yes. The system is designed for DIY assembly and is listed at an intermediate DIY skill level. Accurate measurement, frame squaring, drilling, fastening and hinge alignment are still important.

What is the difference between the 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch gap?

The 3/8-inch option creates a tighter slat rhythm with slightly more visual coverage. The 1/2-inch option creates a little more openness and airflow. Choose based on privacy and design preference.

How long will the powder-coated finish last?

The gate uses an AAMA 2604 architectural powder-coated finish intended for long-term exterior exposure. Actual appearance over time depends on climate, cleaning, physical wear and site conditions.

Does this gate match other ALU20 products?

Yes. The ALU20 horizontal slat language is designed to coordinate across compatible Aluglobus aluminum fence and gate systems for a consistent property-wide appearance.

Can this standard gate be installed with posts set in concrete?

The standard Universal DIY specification is wall-to-wall only. A concrete-footing condition requires the HD post upgrade and should be requested before ordering.

Can the gate be self-closing?

The listed heavy-duty hinge is self-closing capable when paired with the appropriate spring or hydraulic closing hardware. Confirm the required closer and site conditions before purchase.

What size is a standard pedestrian gate?

Most walk gates are 3 to 4 ft wide. Our kits come in 4 × 6 ft and 6 × 6 ft; a 4 ft wide gate fits wheelbarrows and most mowers.

Can I install an aluminum gate kit myself?

Yes. The kit is pre-cut, so it assembles with a drill, a level and standard tools. No welding is needed.

Do aluminum gates rust or sag?

Aluminum does not rust like steel. The gate is built around a full perimeter frame, which keeps the leaf square instead of hanging loose slats on hinges.

Aluminum vs wood gate: which lasts longer?

Aluminum does not warp, rot or attract termites and never needs staining. It is also lighter, which is easier on the hinges.

Built for pedestrian openings where privacy, width and modern curb appeal all matter.

The 6′ × 6′ format works across residential and light-commercial settings where a wide single-swing entry is appropriate and the mounting condition supports the Universal DIY wall-to-wall system.

Front pedestrian entries

Create a substantial modern entrance with six-foot height and a horizontal aluminum rhythm.

Side-yard gates

Use the wider six-foot format where equipment, bikes, bins or larger pedestrian access needs additional clearance.

Courtyards and garden access

Coordinate the black gate with contemporary landscape walls, fencing and exterior architecture.

Multi-unit properties

Use a low-maintenance aluminum pedestrian gate where clean appearance and regular access are priorities.

Light-commercial entries

A practical option for offices, storefront side access and other pedestrian-only openings with suitable mounting conditions.

Coastal and humid climates

Aluminum avoids iron-oxide rust and is well suited to environments where steel maintenance can become a recurring issue.

Durability and finish

Aluminum performance without the rust, rot and repainting cycle of many traditional gate materials.

The frame and slats use 6063-T6 architectural aluminum with an AAMA 2604 powder-coated finish. The black finish is intended for exterior exposure, while the aluminum substrate does not rust like iron-based metal and will not rot, swell or splinter like wood.

6063-T6 aluminumA strong, workable architectural aluminum alloy used throughout the gate system.
AAMA 2604 finishArchitectural powder-coating performance for long-term exterior color and surface protection.
Non-combustible substrateThe aluminum itself does not ignite or sustain flame under normal fire exposure.

Assembly sequence

A clear six-step path from measured opening to aligned single-swing gate.

DIY does not mean guesswork. Confirm the opening and mounting condition first, then keep the frame square throughout assembly and hardware installation.

Verify the opening

Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom and confirm wall-to-wall mounting surfaces are plumb, solid and suitable for the selected hardware.

Assemble the frame

Lay out the universal frame components on a protected flat surface and assemble the structure while checking diagonals for square.

Install ALU20 slats

Place the horizontal slats consistently using the selected 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch spacing and secure them according to the gate system hardware.

Set hinge hardware

Position the heavy-duty hinge system for the required swing direction and verify that the mounting side can carry the assembled gate.

Set the receiver side

Install and align the receiver-side components, latch or lock hardware, T-stopper and L-stopper for clean closure.

Align and test

Check clearances, fasteners, latch engagement and smooth swing through the full arc before putting the gate into regular service.

Buying guide

Confirm the opening, gap, swing and hardware before the gate arrives.

The Universal DIY system simplifies fabrication, but a six-foot-wide pedestrian leaf still depends on good site measurements and correct hardware planning.

Measure wall to wall

Confirm the finished opening at multiple heights and account for hinge, latch and receiver-side clearances.

Select the gap

Choose 3/8-inch for a tighter visual rhythm or 1/2-inch for slightly more openness and airflow.

Confirm swing direction

Plan whether the gate swings in or out based on available clearance, traffic flow and local requirements.

Plan lock hardware

Confirm the latch or lock body, handle clearance and backset before final assembly of the wide side frame.

Check self-closing needs

If self-closing operation is required, select the compatible spring or hydraulic closer rather than assuming the standard hinge alone provides that function.

Confirm mounting condition

The standard configuration is wall-to-wall. Concrete-footing projects require the HD post upgrade and should be specified before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Answers before you assemble the 6′ × 6′ gate.

Common questions about the package, aluminum construction, installation, finish, gap options and ALU20 compatibility.

What is included in the ALU20 Universal DIY 6′ × 6′ kit?

Is the aluminum gate rust-proof?
