Architectural wood-look aluminum driveway gate at a modern home
Aluminum vs Composite Gates

Before You Build a Composite Gate, Look at the Frame.

Composite boards can create a wood-like face, but a gate is more than its infill. It moves, carries hardware, catches wind and may support an operator. The structure behind the design determines whether the entry works as a complete system.

The Gate Frame

The Fence Is Stationary. The Gate Moves Every Day.

Open. Close. Stop. Reverse. Lock. Repeat. A gate carries its own weight while transferring load through hinges, rollers, tracks, posts and hardware. Wind pushes against the infill, especially on privacy designs. Automatic operators add another set of forces.

A GATE WITHOUT A FRAME IS A FENCE WITH HINGES.

A composite board can be attractive infill, but it should not be mistaken for the complete structural solution. Ask what forms the perimeter frame, how corners are connected, where hinges attach, how the latch is supported and whether the design was intended for automation.

Aluglobus HD systems are built around structural aluminum frames. Internal reinforcement, supported hinge zones and motor-ready planning can be incorporated according to the opening and application.

What’s Actually Carrying the Load?

Composite describes an infill material. A safe comparison separates the face of the gate from the structure that makes the gate function.

01

Perimeter Frame

The frame controls gate geometry and helps resist sagging or twisting. Its profile, wall thickness, corners and reinforcement matter more than surface appearance.

02

Hinge Side

Every cycle transfers load through the hinges into the post or wall. Heavy-duty entries need attachment points designed for repeated movement.

03

Latch & Closure

Latches, closers, stops and access hardware require solid attachment. Their location influences alignment, safety and day-to-day reliability.

04

Wind & Privacy

A solid or nearly solid gate acts like a sail. Gate width, height, gaps, location and wind exposure should inform the complete structural design.

COMPOSITE INFILLAppearance First?

Do not assume a board system automatically makes the complete gate motor ready.

ALUGLOBUS HDStructure First.

Frame, hinge support, posts and motor attachment are planned as part of the entry.

Automatic Driveway Gates

Planning a Motor? Start Before Fabrication.

Automation changes the design brief. The operator must connect to a suitable structural member. Stops, travel limits, hinge geometry, post stability, safety devices, electrical supply and access control must be coordinated.

Adding a motor later to a gate that was designed only as a decorative panel can introduce alignment problems, flex and improvised attachment points. A motor-ready aluminum frame gives the fabricator and installer a defined structure to work from.

Swing, Sliding and Pedestrian Applications

Aluglobus offers systems for pedestrian gates, double-swing driveway gates and sliding gates. Each configuration has different load paths and hardware requirements. There is no universal frame for every opening.

What Material Connects the Fence Line to the Home?

CAL FIRE specifically includes gates when recommending that combustible fencing, gates and arbors attached to the home be replaced with noncombustible alternatives.

01

Composite Composition

Many composite boards combine wood or cellulose fiber with thermoplastic polymers and additives. Product formulations and test results vary, but this is not the same material category as noncombustible aluminum.

02

The Connection Point

A side gate often sits beside or attaches near a residence. That makes the material transition at the home especially important in wildfire-prone areas.

03

Aluminum Alternative

An all-aluminum gate option retains noncombustible aluminum in both the structural frame and infill while still allowing solid colors and wood-look finishes.

Important: Do not call any gate universally fireproof or “Zone 0 approved.” Aluminum itself is noncombustible, but complete assemblies, coatings, nearby materials and site conditions matter. California guidance and local requirements can change. Confirm the current rules for the project address.

Daily Exposure

A Gate Experiences More Than Weather.

The system faces sun and rain, but it also cycles, vibrates, stops, closes, carries hardware and occasionally takes an impact. This is why gate comparisons must go beyond board appearance.

CYCLES

Repeated Movement

Every opening and closing cycle transfers load through the frame. Hardware alignment and corner rigidity become long-term performance issues.

UV

Sun & Color

Composite color retention depends on formulation, cap layer, pigment, climate and exposure. Aluglobus uses an architectural powder-coated finish over aluminum.

HEAT

Thermal Movement

Composite boards and aluminum profiles move with temperature. Proper clearances and connections should allow the system to move without binding.

IMPACT

Serviceability

Ask whether damaged infill, covers or hardware can be accessed and replaced without rebuilding the complete gate. Repair planning is part of good system design.

Gate Configurations

The Right System Depends on How the Gate Moves.

A pedestrian gate, double-swing driveway gate and sliding gate do not share the same geometry or hardware demands.

WALK

Pedestrian Gates

Side-yard and pool-area gates need reliable alignment, latch support and appropriate self-closing hardware when required. Opening direction, clear width, threshold, hinges and wall or post conditions must be planned together.

SWING

Double-Swing Gates

Wide driveway openings divide into two leaves, but each leaf still creates cantilever loads at its hinges. Grade, center stop, wind, automation arms and emergency access can affect the design.

SLIDE

Sliding Gates

Sliding entries require adequate runback, a stable track or cantilever system, rollers, guides, stops and operator coordination. The infill design should not interfere with the moving hardware.

Installation Planning

The Opening Must Be Measured as a System.

Provide the clear width between finished supports, desired gate height, bottom clearance, slope or crown in the driveway, wall and post conditions, swing clearance, slide runback, vehicle path and hardware location.

For automatic gates, identify the intended operator, power source, conduit path, photo eyes, loops, edge sensors, access control and manual release needs. The gate fabricator, installer, electrician and automation technician should not discover conflicts after fabrication.

Existing Walls and Posts

An existing support must be suitable for the loads. Appearance does not establish structural capacity. If field conditions differ from the information used for fabrication, reinforcement, posts, aluminum beams or other modifications may be required and can add cost.

For sloped openings, determine whether the gate should remain level, step, rake or use specialized uphill hardware. Each choice changes clearances and automation considerations.

Price & Long-Term Value

What Does an Aluminum Gate Cost Compared With Composite?

There is no honest universal price without the opening and hardware scope. The visible infill is only one part of the total.

Fabricated Gate

Dimensions, frame profile, reinforcement, infill orientation, privacy, finish, gate type and fabrication determine the gate cost. A composite board price does not include the complete frame and hardware.

Hardware & Automation

Hinges, rollers, tracks, latches, closers, operators, controls and safety devices can represent a meaningful part of the project. Compare quotes with equivalent components and installation responsibilities.

Ownership Cost

Include service, alignment, hardware replacement, operator maintenance, finish care and repair access. A properly planned gate can reduce costly field modifications and prevent mismatched systems.

Quote comparison tip: Ask whether fabrication, posts, hinges, latches, stops, motor brackets, operators, safety accessories, electrical work, freight, unloading, permits and installation are included or excluded.

The Real Question

What Do You Want Moving Across the Opening Every Day?

COMPOSITE-FIRST

  • Wood-plastic appearance drives the selection
  • Frame must still be specified
  • Hinge and motor support must be confirmed
  • Composite is not noncombustible metal
  • Board limits can control the design

ALUMINUM-SYSTEM

  • Structural frame drives the entry
  • HD and motor-ready options
  • Noncombustible aluminum material
  • 7-stage pretreatment and AAMA 2604
  • Custom sizes, colors and wood looks
A Balanced Answer

Is Every Composite Gate a Bad Gate?

No. A composite-faced gate can perform when the complete assembly is properly designed, framed, reinforced and installed. Composite products and fabrication methods vary.

The point is that customers should not select a moving gate by the infill sample alone. If you want a structural, custom, noncombustible aluminum alternative with coordinated wood-look finishes, compare the Aluglobus system before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aluminum vs Composite Gate FAQs

What is a composite gate made from?

The visible boards are often wood-plastic composite made from wood or cellulose fibers, thermoplastic polymers and additives. The gate may also require a separate metal frame, posts and hardware.

Can composite boards be used as the gate frame?

Do not assume the decorative board is an adequate structural frame. The complete gate needs a frame designed for its width, height, weight, wind exposure, hinges, latch and intended use.

Is a composite gate fireproof?

No gate should be called fireproof without exact supporting evidence. Wood-plastic composite is not the same material category as noncombustible aluminum.

What does CAL FIRE recommend for gates near a home?

CAL FIRE defensible-space guidance recommends replacing combustible fencing, gates and arbors attached to the home with noncombustible alternatives. Confirm current local requirements for the property.

Can an aluminum gate look like wood?

Yes. Aluglobus offers Ipe, Walnut, Yellow Oak, White Oak and Warm Teak-inspired finishes while retaining aluminum underneath.

Is an Aluglobus gate motor ready?

Motor-ready capability depends on the selected system and project design. Heavy-duty configurations can be planned around automation, structural connections and hardware from the beginning.

What information is needed for an automatic gate quote?

Provide the clear opening, desired height, photos, swing or slide direction, design, finish, posts or walls, slope conditions, operator plans, power location and access-control requirements.

Can the aluminum gate match the fence?

Yes. Slat orientation, gaps, privacy level, solid color or wood-look finish can be coordinated across compatible fence and gate systems.

Which is stronger, a composite gate or aluminum gate?

Compare complete engineered assemblies, not material names alone. Frame profiles, wall thickness, corners, reinforcement, hinges, posts, dimensions and installation determine performance.

Does an aluminum gate require maintenance?

Yes. Exterior gates require periodic cleaning and inspection. Hinges, closers, latches, rollers, tracks, stops, fasteners, automation and safety devices should be serviced according to their manufacturers’ instructions.
